Value the Produce That Actually Replaces Shopping

Updated

Harvesting vegetables and saving money are connected, but the whole harvest does not necessarily replace a purchase. A large glut may be shared, stored or left unused, while the household still buys a different vegetable.

The Kitchen Garden Savings Calculator values only the entered share of usable harvest that replaces bought produce. Each row has kilograms, a replacement percentage and your buying price per kilogram. Period costs are then subtracted from the combined replacement value.

A small household comparison in PKR

Take 15 kg of usable tomatoes, with 80% replacing purchases at an example PKR 200 per kilogram. The replacement amount is 12 kg, valued at PKR 2,400.

Add 5 kg of greens, all replacing purchases at PKR 150 per kilogram. That adds PKR 750. Together, 17 kg replaces shopping with a value of PKR 3,150. Subtract PKR 2,500 in period expenses and the net comparison is PKR 650.

If the same period costs were PKR 4,000, the result would be negative PKR 850. The calculator keeps that negative outcome visible rather than describing every garden as a financial saving.

Choose a price that reflects the avoided purchase

Use what you would otherwise pay for comparable produce during the period. An unusually high market quote copied from another place can inflate the value without representing the household's actual shopping.

These sample rates are not current Pakistan market prices. Enter your own prices, and keep a note of their date and buying basis when reviewing the garden's contribution later. A price per crate or per bunch needs an appropriate kilogram basis before it can be entered here.

The kilograms field is usable harvest. If you already removed unusable produce with Garden Harvest Yield Calculator, do not remove the same loss again as the replacement percentage. That percentage answers whether the usable produce displaced shopping, not whether it was edible.

Keep costs on the same time horizon

The period expense field should match the harvest window being valued. Water, seed, feed and other consumables may belong to that period. A new bed or long lasting equipment may need a separate view if you want to distinguish initial setup from recurring expenses.

This worksheet does not decide how to allocate those costs, price your labour or value the enjoyment of gardening. It is a transparent shopping replacement comparison under the expenses you choose to include.

Use Garden Setup Budget Calculator for the setup bill and preserve its material details separately. Comparing that initial project cost with one harvest period can be useful, but it should not be presented as a complete payback forecast without the later costs and harvest assumptions.
