Skirting Length: Walk the Perimeter Instead of Reusing the Floor Area

Updated

Skirting runs along room edges. A floor area alone cannot tell you how much is required: two rooms with the same area can have different perimeters.

The Whatson Skirting Calculator starts with rectangular room dimensions, deducts the total doorway width and rounds the resulting run to whole pieces.

Measure the edges included in the work

For each room, enter length and width in the selected unit. Quantity repeats an identical room. The model counts 2 × (length + width) for every listed rectangle.

Total door width is entered once for the whole schedule, using the same measurement unit. Add the widths of all door gaps where skirting will not run. Do not enter an opening area here; only the omitted horizontal run is needed.

Piece length is always feet. If the product is supplied in metric lengths, convert that length before entering it.

A 12 × 10 ft room with one door

The gross perimeter is 44 ft. Deducting a 3 ft doorway leaves 41 ft. A 5% allowance changes the planned run to 43.05 ft.

At 8 ft per piece, the checked purchase is six pieces, giving 48 ft of stock length.

That excess is a whole piece rounding effect. It does not guarantee every remaining offcut will fit around a corner or another room.

Corners change the cutting problem

Internal and external corners, joints and short returns can consume more stock than a simple total length suggests. The calculator does not optimise cuts or pool usable offcuts between room rows.

If fixed cupboards, full height openings or another detail interrupt the skirting, include the omitted horizontal length deliberately. The single deduction field can hold a combined run, but keep a separate measurement note explaining it.

For an irregular room, measure its actual edge runs rather than treating the biggest length and width as a complete rectangle. You can total those runs outside the tool if its rectangular schedule does not fit the shape.

Check whether the quote is per piece or per foot

The tool’s price is PKR per piece and applies to the rounded six piece purchase in the example. Do not enter a per foot rate in that field unchanged.

Adhesive, corner accessories, finishing and installation are outside the material figure. If the skirting is cut from floor tiles, agree the actual strip yield and cutting losses first; the calculator does not derive strips from tile size.

Use the Tile Calculator for the floor itself and keep that area based purchase separate from the perimeter based skirting order.
