Paver Quantities and Bedding Sand: Measure the Paved Rectangle First

A paved area needs units for the surface and a volume for the bedding layer. The Whatson Paver Calculator estimates both from a rectangular area, paver face size, joint width and bedding depth.

It also shows the rectangle’s outer edge length. That is a measurement aid, not a separate count of kerbs or edge restraint products.

Paver sizes and joints stay in millimetres

Area length and width follow the selected measurement unit. Paver length and width, joint width and bedding depth are entered in millimetres.

The unit estimate divides the area by a rectangular paver module that adds the joint to each face dimension. This is an area model, not a detailed bond or interlocking pattern layout.

Use the relevant product’s effective dimensions. Decorative shapes and complex laying patterns may not be represented well by one simple rectangle.

A 20 × 12 ft paved space

Use a 240 sq ft area, pavers measuring 200 × 100 mm, a 3 mm joint, 30 mm bedding depth and a 5% allowance.

The checked order is 1,120 pavers. Bedding sand with allowance is about 24.80 cft. The outer edge is 64 ft.

The sand estimate is area × bedding depth, with the same allowance applied. It does not add a separate loose delivery or compaction factor. If the delivered material requires that adjustment, keep it explicit in your order planning.

The base beneath the bedding is separate

The tool does not estimate an aggregate subbase, determine its thickness or assess the ground beneath the pavement. Use the project’s specified build up rather than treating the 30 mm example bedding as a complete pavement design.

The Crush & Gravel Calculator can estimate a separately specified aggregate layer. Keep its depth, density and allowance distinct from the bedding sand calculation.

Rectangular area does not describe every driveway

For a tapered entrance or multiple connected sections, calculate supported rectangles separately and keep their records. Do not count the bounding rectangle if it includes unpaved space.

Cutting along curves, drains, columns and borders can change actual unit purchases. The calculator does not optimise offcuts or generate a cutting plan for those details.

A price total for pavers only

The rate is PKR per paver and prices the rounded order. Bedding sand, jointing material, edge restraints, base work, transport and labour are not included in that figure.

Before ordering, compare the product dimensions and intended joint with the installer and supplier. Then review the surface units, bedding volume and edge run as three separate quantities rather than treating them as one complete job price.
