A website may display the same image in a small card and a wider article area. Separate widths can avoid sending a large original everywhere, while preserving the source ratio across those variants.
Website Thumbnail Maker creates three editable width versions. It is a file preparation tool, not a WordPress media registration or responsive image markup generator.
Heights follow the source ratio
A 400 by 300 source with widths of 320, 640 and 1200 produces heights of 240, 480 and 900. Each version keeps the original 4:3 shape.
| Chosen width | Resulting height |
|---|---|
| 320 | 240 |
| 640 | 480 |
| 1200 | 900 |
The larger versions in that example enlarge the source. Their pixel count increases, but real photographic detail does not. Choose widths suited to the available source and the destination display.
A width variant is not a cover crop
The tool does not make every image fit an exact card ratio. If a card needs a square or a fixed banner shape, crop or compose a suitable source before generating the widths.
The outputs can be downloaded together as a ZIP. Their names identify the small, medium and large slots, even when you have edited the numerical widths to suit your design.
Generating these files does not automatically add srcset, sizes or a Media Library relationship. Your website still needs to use the variants appropriately.
Inspect the smallest output for readable detail and the largest for unnecessary enlargement. Then compare the bytes. A consistent thumbnail set should match the real layout needs rather than simply accepting the default widths for every image.
