Dry Rice, Cooking Water and Cooked Yield Need Separate Assumptions

Updated

A guest count does not uniquely determine a rice quantity. Portion size, the rest of the meal and the yield you actually obtain all matter. The Whatson Rice Portion Calculator keeps your chosen dry portion, water ratio and cooked yield as separate inputs.

It is a quantity planning tool. Its opening values are not a universal cooking instruction for basmati, sela or every rice sold in Pakistan.

Choose the dry amount per person first

Enter the number of people and grams of dry rice per person. The resulting dry total is the purchasing and weighing quantity before cooking.

The water ratio is millilitres per gram of dry rice. The cooked yield is cooked mass divided by dry mass. Neither field is inferred from the other, so both should come from the method you intend to use.

Four people with the example inputs

Enter four people, 75 g dry rice each, a water ratio of 2 ml/g and a cooked yield factor of 3.

  • Dry rice to weigh: 300 g.
  • Water from the entered ratio: 600 ml.
  • Cooked mass at the entered yield: 900 g.
  • Cooked mass per person: 225 g.

These are checked arithmetic results. The worksheet has not tested whether this water amount gives that cooked yield for your rice and cooking technique.

A yield factor is not a water instruction

A factor of three says the expected cooked mass is three times the dry mass. It does not mean three cups of water must be used for every cup of rice.

Draining water, retained moisture and your own measurement point are outside this simple allocation. If you have weighed a comparable batch before and after cooking, Cooking Yield Calculator can calculate the mass relationship to use in your planning.

Use consistent measurement conditions when comparing batches. “Cooked mass” should refer to the same stage of your preparation, rather than including a pot in one weighing and excluding it in another.

Keep side dishes and biryani plans separate

Choose the dry portion that fits the meal you are planning; the tool does not prescribe a dietary portion. A rice side dish and a rice centred meal need not use the same entry.

Biryani Batch Planner adds selected protein and other ingredient quantities to a batch plan. It does not import this rice calculator’s water ratio or provide a full cooking method.

Save the dry portion, water ratio and yield beside the guest count. A total of 300 g is reproducible only when the portion assumption behind it is clear.
