The three headline numbers on a fertilizer bag are not three identical kinds of elemental nutrient percentage. Nitrogen is shown as N, while the phosphorus and potassium entries use the label conventions P₂O₅ and K₂O.
The NPK Nutrient Content Calculator calculates the masses on those stated label bases. It also provides equivalent elemental P and K figures. Keeping both versions visible helps avoid comparing a label oxide quantity with a recommendation or record that uses an elemental basis.
One kilogram of a ten ten ten product
Enter 1 kg of product and label values of 10% N, 10% P₂O₅ and 10% K₂O. The calculator gives 100 g of nitrogen, 100 g of label phosphate and 100 g of label potash.
The last two are not 100 g of elemental phosphorus and potassium. Using the tool's conversion factors, they correspond to 43.64 g of elemental P and 83.01 g of elemental K.
| Reported basis | Mass in this example |
|---|---|
| N | 100 g |
| P₂O₅ label amount | 100 g |
| Equivalent elemental P | 43.64 g |
| K₂O label amount | 100 g |
| Equivalent elemental K | 83.01 g |
Start with product mass, not bag price
The mass input is the quantity of fertilizer being considered or applied. Entering the mass of a purchased bag when you are using only half of it would double the reported nutrient amounts for that application.
All three analysis inputs are percentages from the product label. This calculator is not a way to infer a missing analysis from the colour, texture or trade name of a product. It also rejects a combined entered label analysis above 100 rather than silently accepting that worksheet input.
The label conventions and elemental conversions are explained in University of Maryland Extension’s Garden Fertilizer Basics.
Content does not establish crop sufficiency
The result tells you nutrient content on the stated basis. It does not show whether the application meets the crop's requirement, whether nutrients are available at the required time or what has already been supplied by the soil and other materials.
Use Fertilizer Label Rate Calculator when you have an approved product rate per square metre and want an area based application mass. If preparing a soluble solution for one nutrient, Nutrient Solution PPM Calculator needs its target and product percentage on the same nutrient basis. Copying a P₂O₅ percentage into an elemental P target without conversion would mix two different quantities.
