A compost top dressing is not the same order as filling an empty raised bed. Here the growing ground already exists, and you are adding a measured layer across its surface. The important starting measurements are the treated area and the additional depth.
Use Compost Top Dressing Calculator for this job. It reports volume in cubic metres and litres, then estimates delivery mass from a separately entered bulk density. A price per cubic metre gives a simple material cost without treating kilograms and litres as interchangeable.
A small layer still adds up
For 20 m² of ground and a 2 cm layer, the required volume is 0.4 m³. That is 400 litres. At an entered loose bulk density of 600 kg/m³, the estimated mass is 240 kg.
If a supplier quotes PKR 9,000 per cubic metre for this example, 0.4 m³ costs PKR 3,600 before any charges not included in that rate. The calculator is using your entered quote; it is not checking the latest compost price in Lahore, Karachi or another market.
Density belongs to the material being delivered
The 600 kg/m³ example is an assumption, not a rule for compost. Moisture and the delivered material affect its mass per volume. Use a supplier figure that describes the actual loose product if the weight matters to your ordering or handling plan.
A cubic metre is 1,000 litres. It is not automatically 1,000 kg of compost. Confusing these quantities can make a small garden order look far heavier, or lighter, than the product you are buying.
The calculator also does not certify what a roof, balcony, trolley or vehicle can carry. A mass estimate is only one input to that separate decision. It excludes the weight of containers, retained water and the other items already occupying the space.
Match the layer to your soil assessment
Choose the top dressing depth deliberately. Existing organic material, crop needs and soil condition are not measured by an area calculation. Nutrient content cannot be inferred from 400 litres of compost, so this result should not become an automatic fertilizer dose.
The University of Maryland Extension guide to raised bed soil explains why material selection and soil assessment belong alongside filling decisions.
Use Raised Bed Soil Calculator when the job is a complete rectangular bed fill instead. If compost is one ingredient in a volume recipe, Potting Mix Ratio Calculator will show its share of the batch and the whole packages required without replacing that recipe with a guessed compost percentage.
