Mulch orders often go wrong because the measured garden area and the area receiving mulch are treated as the same thing. Paths, paved edges and deliberately clear spaces around plants can remove a noticeable part of a small bed from the order.
The Mulch Quantity Calculator asks for total area and unmulched area separately. It then applies the chosen layer depth, adds an optional loose material allowance and converts the result into whole bags. Enter a depth suitable for the material and planting situation rather than accepting the example automatically.
Eighteen square metres under the layer
Start with 20 m² of bed area and leave 2 m² uncovered. The mulched ground is 18 m². At a 5 cm layer, the geometric volume is 0.9 m³, or 900 litres.
Adding 10% extra changes the order to 990 litres. With 50 litre bags, the calculator rounds up to 20 bags. At the illustrative price of PKR 500 per bag, that order costs PKR 10,000. The purchased bags contain 1,000 stated litres; the whole bag rounding is separate from the 10% allowance.
Exclude spaces once, not twice
One approach is to enter the whole rectangular bed, then subtract the parts that will remain clear. Another is to measure only the mulched ground. If you choose the second approach, do not subtract the same paths again in the exclusion field.
An unmulched area larger than the total area is rejected. When the two are equal, the tool returns zero covered area and no bags. That makes a useful check when a copied measurement or an accidental decimal has removed the entire bed.
The depth field refers to the layer you intend to place. A 5 cm entry is not 5 mm, and it is not the height of the mulch bag. For metres and centimetres, covered square metres multiplied by depth centimetres and then by ten gives litres.
Revisit the depth before placing the order
Material that has already been spread may not require a complete new layer. Inspect several spots and calculate the additional depth you need. Adding the full example depth on top of an existing layer could order more than your actual top up plan calls for.
This worksheet does not decide which mulch to use or how close to place it around stems and trunks. Leave those spaces clear as appropriate for your planting, and put their measured area into the exclusion rather than expecting the calculator to infer them.
For compost being spread as a measured top dressing, use Compost Top Dressing Calculator. Its optional bulk density and price per cubic metre are better suited to a loose compost delivery than a bag based mulch order.
