A Supplier Discount Does Not Equal the Saving on Every Usable Item

Updated

A bulk quote can look attractive until delivery, purchase charges and unusable units are counted. The Bulk Purchase Calculator starts with the supplier discount, then spreads the complete entered purchase cost across the units you expect to use or sell.

Calculate the discounted invoice separately

Enter 20 units at PKR 1,000 each and a supplier discount of 5%. The undiscounted product total is PKR 20,000. The discount saves PKR 1,000, leaving PKR 19,000 for the products.

Add purchase shipping PKR 1,000 and other batch charges PKR 200. The resulting cash purchase total is PKR 20,200. This is the amount funded for the entered batch, not just the attractive discounted merchandise figure.

Spread the cost over the stock that remains usable

With 5% expected loss, one of the 20 units is unavailable and 19 remain usable. Dividing PKR 20,200 by 19 gives about PKR 1,063.16 per usable unit.

The unit cost is above the original PKR 1,000 supplier price despite the discount. Purchase shipping, other charges and loss together outweigh the saving. This is exactly why a discount percentage alone cannot establish whether a batch is cheaper.

Keep purchase expenses separate from customer fulfilment

Shipping stock from the supplier to your store belongs here. Shipping an individual order from your store to a customer belongs in later order pricing. Entering both in this purchase batch without recording the scope can make later costs difficult to reconcile.

The loss assumption represents units you cannot use. The tool does not automatically credit resale, scrap or salvage proceeds. If some value is recoverable, review the purchase cost allocation deliberately rather than assuming all unusable units have zero financial recovery.

Compare batches on cost and practical quantity

For a second supplier quote, hold the definitions of usable units and included charges steady. Comparing one delivered quotation with another quotation excluding freight will favour the incomplete estimate.

A lower unit cost does not by itself justify buying more stock. Storage, sales pace and cash commitment still matter. Inventory Turnover & Days Calculator examines an entered stock turnover period, while Stock Runway Calculator shows coverage at an entered daily demand. Once the batch is received, update the loss estimate from the actual inspection before using its cost in retail or wholesale pricing.
