Convert Unix Timestamps With the Correct Unit

Updated

A timestamp with three extra digits can describe the same instant in milliseconds rather than seconds. Reading it with the wrong unit produces a very different date, even when the number itself looks plausible.

Unix Timestamp Converter converts whole seconds or milliseconds and shows the instant in UTC and Pakistan time. It can also convert a supplied wall clock date in an explicit zone.

The epoch gives a clear starting point

Unix second 0 corresponds to 1970 January 1 at 00:00:00 UTC. The same instant is 05:00:00 in Asia/Karachi. The local display changes; the instant does not.

A millisecond value of 1000 also represents one second after the epoch. Select milliseconds before converting it. Negative millisecond values retain their fraction rather than being rounded carelessly toward zero.

When entering a date, use the expected year, month, day and time format. Choose UTC or Pakistan time deliberately. A date string without a zone is not enough to establish which instant you meant.

Keep seconds separate from milliseconds

The tool's Unix seconds result is a whole second value. Its millisecond result includes the fractional part where that was supplied. An application that stores milliseconds needs the matching output field.

A timestamp is not a duration or a scheduled recurring event. It identifies an instant under the supported range. It does not say whether a deadline uses inclusive days or whether an office was open at that time.

This conversion requires 64 bit PHP on the host. Invalid or unsupported dates produce an error instead of a guessed date.

For a log comparison, record the source unit and zone alongside the converted value. Most confusing timestamp disagreements come from missing that information, rather than from a different clock format on the screen.
