Scaling a Recipe for More Guests Without Losing the Original Ratios

Updated

A recipe for four people does not need to be doubled when six are coming. Its quantity multiplier is 6 ÷ 4, or 1.5. The useful starting point is the yield of the original recipe, followed by the ingredient amounts actually used.

The Whatson Recipe Scaler keeps that arithmetic together in one ingredient list. It suits a handwritten family recipe just as well as a recipe measured entirely in grams.

Choose servings or a direct multiplier

In servings mode, enter the original and required number of servings. In factor mode, enter the multiplier itself. Use 0.5 for half a batch or 1 1/2 for one and a half batches. Fraction fields also accept a quantity such as 1/2.

Servings must mean the same thing on both sides. Six small snack portions and six full meals are different requests, even though the number six looks identical.

From four portions to six

For the checked example, enter 250 g flour, 150 ml milk and two eggs in a recipe serving four. Request six servings.

Ingredient Original quantity New quantity
Flour 250 g 375 g
Milk 150 ml 225 ml
Eggs 2 3

The multiplier is 1.5000. Every row receives the same multiplier; the original unit stays beside its quantity.

Add a separate row for each ingredient rather than folding salt, oil or decoration into a flour row. A clear name makes the exported worksheet easier to use when several recipes are being prepared together.

A fraction is a quantity, not a conversion

If a recipe contains 1/2 cup of an ingredient, enter 1/2 as its amount and cup as its unit. This tool does not know whether that cup is 250 ml or a household teacup. It also cannot turn a cup of maida into grams.

For that different job, use Ingredient Weight Converter with an explicit cup size and ingredient reference. For fractional eggs, Egg Portion Converter can express an entered edible egg portion as a mass.

Keep the method beside the ingredient list

A quantity multiplier does not multiply cooking time, pan capacity or mixer capacity. Check the equipment and method separately before committing to a larger batch. The scaler is a worksheet for your chosen recipe, not a newly tested recipe.

Download the result only after the last ingredient edit and recalculation. The page marks an existing result stale when inputs change, which helps prevent an old quantity list from being used for the new guest count.
