Printing Costs: Count Printed Sides and Paper Sheets

Updated

An 80 page document printed on both sides does not become a 40 side print job. It still has 80 printed sides, while using fewer physical paper sheets.

The Printing and Binding Cost keeps printed sides, sheets and binding separate. Use it with a shop quote that clearly states which charges apply per printed side and which apply per sheet.

Read the quote before filling the rates

Enter document pages and the number of copies. Select single sided or duplex printing.

The side rate is charged for every printed document page. The extra paper charge applies to physical sheets in addition to that side rate. If paper is already included in the side rate, leave the extra paper charge at zero to avoid counting it twice.

Binding is charged once per copy. If only some copies need binding, calculate the bound and unbound groups separately or use a separate estimate for that charge.

Three duplex copies of 80 pages

Each 80 page duplex copy uses 40 sheets. Three copies therefore require 120 physical sheets and 240 printed sides.

At PKR 5 per printed side, printing costs PKR 1,200. With no extra paper charge and binding at PKR 100 per copy, the order totals PKR 1,500, or PKR 500 per copy.

Changing to single sided doubles sheets to 240. It does not change the 240 printed sides. The total changes only if the entered quote components change with sheet count or print mode.

Odd page counts are rounded per copy

A three page duplex document needs two sheets for each copy. Two copies therefore use four sheets, not three. The last sheet of each copy has one blank side.

The calculator rounds sheets separately for each copy before multiplying by copies. It does not combine the blank backs of separate bound copies into a shared print arrangement.

What this model leaves out

Colour pages, different paper sizes, covers, lamination, delivery and shop minimum charges need separate treatment where the quote includes them. One side rate assumes all entered pages use the same pricing.

The tool also does not rearrange pages, choose booklet imposition or check whether a PDF includes blank pages. Use the number of pages the shop will actually print.

Ask whether the quote counts covers inside the page total and whether binding already includes cover sheets. A precise worksheet cannot repair an unclear quote.

For a student project budget, save the side and sheet counts with the total. Those counts make it much easier to explain why a revised page count or extra copy changes the price.
