How Many Final Exam Marks Do You Still Need?

Updated

If you have already secured 42 course points and want a final course result of 75%, you need another 33 points. The paper score required depends on how much the final examination is worth.

The Final Exam Marks Needed separates those two figures: weighted course points and raw marks on the final paper. Mixing them is the most common reason a target looks easier than it really is.

Enter secured points, not a running average

Secured points are contributions already earned toward the complete course. An 80% assignment worth 20% contributes 16 secured points, rather than 80.

Add the contributions from completed assessments. The Weighted Course Grade worksheet can help explain those contributions, but its weights must describe a complete 100% course scenario.

The final’s weight is its share of the full course. Enter the final paper’s maximum separately. A 40% course weight can apply to a paper marked out of 50, 75 or 100.

Why the answer is 83 out of 100

With 42 points secured, a final worth 40% and a 75% course target, the final must contribute 33 points. That requires 33 ÷ 40 × 100 = 82.5% on the paper.

On a 100 mark paper, the whole mark requirement is 83. At that score, the course result becomes 42 + 83 × 0.40 = 75.2%.

The tool rounds upwards because 82 marks would produce only 74.8%. Rounding to the nearest mark would miss the target in this example.

When the target cannot be reached

Change the target to 90% while keeping 42 secured points and a 40% final weight. Even full marks would give 82%. The calculator reports the target as unreachable instead of presenting a possible paper score.

If the final has zero weight, it cannot add course points. If your target is already secured, the arithmetic requirement is zero, although a separate final pass condition may still apply.

Use the target as a planning number

Confirm the final weight in the current course outline. Check whether attendance, practical work or an examination pass condition has its own minimum.

A secured total cannot exceed the course weight available before the final. If the tool rejects that entry, revisit your assessment contributions. Do not lower the final weight to fit a mistaken total.
