LAHORE: Punjab government has announced a local holiday for Lahore on February 6 to mark the Basant festival. The decision allows citizens to take part in the celebrations after years of restrictions.
The holiday was approved after a recommendation from the district administration. The administration had initially suggested February 5, but the provincial government finalised the date as February 6.
Deputy Commissioner Lahore issued instructions to ensure safety and discipline during the event. Children under 18 will only be allowed to celebrate Basant when accompanied by family members.
Lahore Police have divided the city into three zones to manage the expected crowds. Red zones will have the strictest controls, yellow zones will face moderate restrictions, and green zones will be considered safer with fewer limits.
Police also said advanced technology will be used to monitor the city during the festival. This will include drone cameras, social media monitoring, and special control rooms operating in real time.
Authorities warned of strict action against anyone involved in rooftop drinking, aerial firing, or other illegal activities. They said there will be zero tolerance for such behaviour.
Officials said all departments are working together to ensure that Basant is celebrated peacefully and safely, while keeping the tradition alive in Lahore.
