Netflix plans to release a redesigned mobile app in 2026 to keep up with the changing user trends in finding and consuming video content. The update was discussed in the company’s fourth quarter of earnings call on Tuesday.
The redesign is focused on short-form and vertical video features, as these platforms continue to grow, like YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram. Netflix said that the new app will also help promote its growing collection of original video podcasts.
According to Co CEO Greg Peters, the new app is designed to help in the long term business growth. He also added that the new structure will allow Netflix to test and revise features over time.
An important part of the redesign app is the major use of vertical video feeds. Netflix has been testing swipeable video clips since May, with short videos of its movies and TV series. These feeds can later contain clips linked to new formats, such as video podcasts.
Netflix also focuses more on video podcasts, an area where YouTube has long been dominant. The platform has also partnered with Spotify and iHeartMedia to bring existing video podcasts to Netflix.
According to the company executives, the strategy is focused on improving discovery rather than copying social media platforms. Netflix CTO Elizabeth Stone has spoken at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference earlier, saying that the company is not trying to become TikTok but wants to enhance the user’s search experience when finding entertainment.
During the earnings call, co CEO Ted Sarandos stated that streaming services do not compete with other streaming services only, but the entire entertainment industry. He noted that the boundaries between the TV, cinemas, and the Internet are becoming less clear.
The redesigned mobile app is expected to launch later in 2026.
